And The Nominees Are...
David twigs us to an important NRA awards process, open to all members, as well as "the nominee’s agency head, other law enforcement officials, elected officials, fellow officers, community leaders, [and] interested citizens".
While acknowledging that there are legitimate peace officers who take their oaths to the federal and state constitutions seriously, does anyone actually think those folks are the majority of LEOs in today's America?
For a more typical cross-section of some of our heroes, go here and scroll through the posted entries.
My favorite nominee for 2010 NRA Law Enforcement Officer of the Year is Tennessee State Trooper Michael Loftis, badge #331, for acts profoundly beyond the call of duty, as described at the RTC blog.
Vote early and often here. Trooper Loftis appears to qualify for all three categories for consideration on the NRA form:
- Valor
- Public Service
- Dedication To The Principals (sic) Of Our Constitutional Heritage
Really, folks -- please do take the time to submit multiple nominations for Trooper Loftis. Should you need additional information about Trooper Loftis, information for the Public Information Officer for the TSP is here:

Oath Keepers is looking into it. Statement on their official site.
The affidavit used by the child protection people can be seen here:

Carefully listed along with previous encounters with the social workers -- maybe a neighbor reported raised voices? -- is the fact that Mr. Irish has bought a handgun, a rifle and a Taser, and thinks the Constitution and Bill of Rights are a pretty good thing. That pesky First Amendment. We'll just see about that, huh?
Oh, he allegedly carried a handgun concealed without a permit, so he's not an NRA-approved "law-abiding citizen."
Small update on the Trooper Loftis abuse. "That guy doesn't need to have guns." State says if he gives up trying to get them back, they won't press charges. CHARGES?
