My first question is: When was the ATF so full of integrity as the folks at Clean-up ATF claim?
This is an agency that has been plagued with lawlessness for 40 years or more. Gun Owners of America did a video over 20 years ago about the abusive, lawless behavior of ATF. Bear in mind that was long before Waco.
Frankly, I view Grassley as a class A jerk-off (like all members of the world's most elite club aka: the United States Senate). He only gets involved if there is something for him to gain....typical of his ilk. He is not "statesman" doing good deeds for the people. Anyone recall his performance during the Weaver hearing? He showed himself to be beholden to the thugs.
Does anyone really believe this is going to be the downfall of ATF? Really? I have said before if this case results in the extreme measure of disbanding the ATF (not likely) then the members of that agency will be absorbed into any number of other fed-goon/alphabet soup outfits. It will be nothing less than a re-shuffle of this rigged deck of cards.
It is good to see they are catching some heat but does it matter in the big scheme of things? Will this change a culture of entrenched bureaucratic backed thuggery? Is anyone paying attention?

Gotta remember to look at it from the Gummint's point of view: for propaganda purposes, a dead hero is even better than a living one. They can construct the narrative. They can wheel out the grieving widow and kids to support the "Terry Memorial Rights-Stripping Act of 2011".
Any incidental sound and fury surrounding the matter is simply noise....
"Have you contacted your congresscritters?"
Oh yeah... and if anyone wishes to use my emails below as a base for your own letter... have at it!
The ATF is finally getting shoved to the wall for what they are doing and for their past misdeeds, help out and pile on!

Dear Sir,
I would like to bring a very serious matter to your attention; it concerns a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) project called “Gunrunner”, which supplied weapons to smugglers who in turn delivered these same weapons to Mexico.
The project was supposedly set up to track the weapons, but many now believe that the ATF lost track of many weapons, which turned up in the hands of smugglers, drug runners and the cartels. In addition, they have been using these same weapons that have been captured by the Mexican Government to bolster ongoing funding requests and upcoming legislation.
There are rampant rumors within the Law Enforcement community that a weapon supplied by the ATF was used by the criminal that gunned down the Border Patrol Agent a few months ago.
“Project Gunrunner” shows how out of control the ATF is, and I urge you to look into this matter immediately.
I await your response,

Dear Sir,
This is my second correspondence on this subject; I have not received a response from the first email yet which troubles me greatly.
“Project Gunwalker” as it is now called, shows an out of control Federal Department formulating and carrying-out ILLEGAL operations and attempting to shift the blame onto the American public in an attempt to further restrict our God-Given Rights. Now a Mexican newspaper has found, and is running the story… YET I HAVE NOT HEARD ONE PEEP OUT OF MY REPRESENTATIVES ON THIS.
I demand action! This is one of the reasons the GOP lost power over the years, mainly due to their ineptness at seeing and dealing with problems of this nature.
The investigations on “Project Gunwalker” must start now, as the ATF is currently attempting to take action against the whistleblowers that brought this ILLEGAL plot into the open.
Awaiting your reply,
Response from Chambliss
Thank you for contacting me regarding allegations of misconduct by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) in the transportation of weapons across the border, and the death of Border Patrol Agent (BPA) Brian Perry.
Recently, I was contacted with information regarding this situation. I directed the individuals who had this information to the Senate committee that provides oversight for BATFE, the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
I anticipate the committee will move forward in a constructive way, ensuring justice and ensuring operations on the borders are concluded in a satisfactory manner. I will continue to monitor this situation, and keep your thoughts in mind as we move forward.
I appreciate hearing from you.
Your blog has seems to have lost the ability to find older articles.

HW:
Yeah, the archive function in Blogger arbitrarily stops at some point. I'd pay (reasonably) to have some trusted move everything to wordpress.
Any suggestions/volunteers, LMK.
What old post sought you?
"Members of the Judiciary Committee have received numerous allegations that the ATF sanctioned the sale of hundreds of assault weapons to suspected straw purchasers, who then allegedly transported these weapons throughout the southwestern border area and into Mexico."
This is huge.
When and where are the public hearings on this?
What's next? A US federal agency supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraqistan who then use those weapons to kill US soldiers and marines?
Someone in DC needs to be arrested, prosecuted, and suffer the fullest legal consequences.
I finally made it through the 3 parts of "The art of strategic citizenship" and had a couple of comments.
I thought he was too quick to throw blacks under the collective bus, but not jews for their liberalism. I try my best to judge people as individuals.
It was an interesting read, and I can not fault his data, it's just more data points, that there is going to be a fight, we better win...
Be safe

Is it just me, or does this whole episode sound just like it should be in a Matthew Bracken novel?
KPN3% opines: "Does anyone really believe this is going to be the downfall of ATF? Really? Even if you only look at this exercise -- and it has taken us two years to get to this point, a veritable overnight success bureaucratically speaking -- as one designed to buy time that we desperately need to use in preparation, organization, etc., then the answer is certainly yes.
Criticizing Grassley for acting on his self-interest -- as if you or anyone else doesn't -- is, well, like blaming gravity for stuff falling out of the sky. We had to craft our arguments to Grassley's (and Sessions') staff in such a way as to get them to SEE their self-interest, but that was mere tactics and persistence. That the Senators contacted the whistleblowers and not the other way around was critical.
As my friend David Codrea often says, "any chair in a bar fight."
Other than that, if this scandal and the hearings that are coming, don't live up to your expectations, then I must offer my most humble apologies for disappointing you. ;-)

A nonspecific response to my repeated emails about Gunwalker: Sen. Mark Warner's big "but":
"Thank you for contacting me to share your views on gun control.
I realize that there are very strong opinions on both sides of the debate around Second Amendment rights. I support public policies that ensure the responsible and appropriate use of guns, as well as efforts to reduce gun-related crimes through increased enforcement and background checks. I supported full funding of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), the only national database that flags individuals who are precluded under current law from purchasing or possessing firearms. ***I do not, however, support laws or regulations that infringe on the Second Amendment Constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.***
In the aftermath of the tragedy in Tucson, Arizona and in light of the Virginia Tech shootings, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to ensure firearms do not get into the wrong hands. In the United States Senate, legislation on gun control generally falls under the jurisdiction of the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which I am not a member. However, I will keep your views in mind should any legislation on this matter come before the full Senate in the future."
In other words, email in one hand and sh-- in the other, and see which one fills up first.
I don't "have" congressmen any more than I "have" a leech, a tick, or any other bloodsucking parasite.

Yep. We need Matthew or someone like him to write the next chapter ,as well, and the ending too.
