The idea that to be successful human tribes must breed themselves up to the carrying capacity and be limited by starvation, is ridiculous. The "population bomb" is a dead end which the West has sensibly chosen not to pursue. Oral contraception and abortion now enables the alternative of a smaller population of very wealthy and powerful people, each controlling a lot of natural resources. The only problems standing in the way are the ideas of politics, majority rule, and envy. The arguments for anti-immigration protectionism is false economics. The immigrants are willing to work harder for less, as they improve themselves to become first-worlders themselves. Stop whining and compete. The rest of the piece, about keeping the middle class in the rat race so it won't have the free time to successfully object to the aristocracy, is correct.

There is no "finite" level of natural resources that can be pointed to with any level of accuracy.
Further, there's the confusion of "all people are alike" and that all cultures are interchangeable, which is profoundly untrue.
Just as the Celtic people of what is now France had a viable argument against the invasion of the Italians, known as Romans, we have the same, and very valid argument against the ongoing invasion of the third world people from Mexico and points further south, and from the middle east.
It doesn't matter if immigrants are willing to work, harder is a subjective term, what does matter is their unwillingness to become civilized by western culture.
Most are not and therefore are unwelcome.
The "Population Bomb" is junk science. Have you read the book of the same name? Julian Simon destroys Paul Ehrlich's line of reasoning, in his books "The Ultimate Resource" and "The Ultmate Resource II."
As Theodore Dyer wrote in Roosevelt and the Idea of Race, Theodore Roosevelt (interventionist wretch that he was) was accurate, when he said that Western Civilization was "unfit to cumber the earth, if its women do not work hard, and its women breed."
Oral contraception and abortion enables their users to "prove themselves unfit to cumber the earth," which Roosevelt also pointed out. It enables them to show that they do not believe enough in their values and ideas to pass them on to future generations by having children. Contraception and abortion help foster the already-extant cultural vacuum, a void which other cultures are more than willing to come and fill. Granted, a culture that embraces the State above freedom, prefers luxury above children, and chooses dissipation above productivity, is a culture that has already proven itself unfit to cumber the earth. Their use of contraception and abortion is merely a symptom of their society's cultural vacuum.

If anti-immigration protectionism is so false, pray tell me who benefits in a wide open free-for-all? The ones with the numbers or the ones without? The only thing standing in the way of your polyglot utopia is your self-hatred. I suggest you stop whining you Marxist Creed and compete. Oh, I forgot, Marxists like to have their enemies kill themselves, and then murder anyone left. Suggesting the middle class has to compete with aristocracy is ludicrous, until one remembers that the only aristocracy in this country is it's Marxists. That would be you, sport.

They DON'T.
Mexicans turn the parts of the USA they inhabit into extensions of Mexico. Arabs turn European cities into third world hellholes. There _are_ majority-African neighborhoods that are nice to live in, but they are significantly outnumbered by those that are not.
The ones that improve themselves out of it are a definite minority. If the country wants to take that minority in, that is something that can be debated (there are reasons against it also, human nature and culture is not strictly utilitarian). However that is not the current policy - instead, it's the massive guilt trip: we've had our chance to be rich, now we need to let everyone else have what we worked for. Because obviously we can't have gotten so rich without taking it from them. Or something.
Also, the population bomb is not a dead end. The greatest explosion of creativity and innovation in the West coincided with the population explosion. Human beings are a resource, not a cost. But different types of human being are different types of resource. White westerners have proven rather better at putting together and maintaining a high technology civilization that raises carrying capacity than Arab Muslims or sub-Saharan Africans or central American mestizos have. Is it really so wise to deliberately toss that population aside and bet the survival of that civilization on those groups that have, thus far, absolutely no track record of being capable of handling it?
Of course this completely ignores the question of why exactly anybody should be forced to live in a country populated by people who are not their countrymen - in a country that is not theirs anymore. This causes war, always. It will this time around, also.

Anon 6:04, I don't have a problem with equal opportunity. I have a problem with PRIVILEGE. Foreigners from socialist countries sneaking in, bringing their socialist ideas with them, fraudulently voting for socialist candidates who offer amnesty and who want to turn this country into where they came from. Employers paying them under the table to avoid taxes because they can because a fake Social Security number is invisible to the IRS. How do you suggest I compete? Go back to college for another three years and $30,000 and get a PhD? In what discipline? Maybe ethics in government. If Janet Reno can lecture about that, anyone should be able to. I met one PhD working as an employment office receptionist, laid off from a state-supported university that wants a 20% tuition increase. And another next year.
Buy a truck and haul stuff? My brother in law bought a dump truck after he was laid off from a printing plant. (They opened a replacement plant in Mexico.) There's not enough work to go around because of the construction slowdown.
An oil truck? Only old poor people want or use use fossil fuels, and they're dying off.
A vending truck? Health regulations make it very difficult and expensive to run one, and they're already parking bumper to bumper at the few job sites there are.
As a libertarian, I agree that people should be able to live and work where they want. Be nice if any other country had immigration laws as forgiving and unenforced as ours.
The end goal of Leftism is the exact same as Charles Manon's Helter Skelter, just without the Beatles soundtrack. Elmination of all whites (except for a small elite to rule over everything) and a planet of servile non-whites.

As a resident of the People's Democratic Republic of California, I've seen the degeneration of living conditions you write of firsthand & it's even more glaring in SoCal & has reached the point of ethnic cleansing (Foreign & American Latinos evicting American blacks from their formerly racially homogeneous enclaves by use of terror tactics) of ever larger areas of L.A.. The interesting part of this is that there's little/no outcry from the 'leaders' of the black community, 'white' Lefties, & the press about this occurrence &, from what I hear, the same thing's going on in Atlanta & Chi w/ a similar deafening silence from the aforementioned usual suspects.

Note that in spite of repeated calls by industry/others for the re-establisment of high school/post-HS VoTech courses, the population's told that getting a degree or 3 is the ONLY ('respectable') way to get ahead. One wonders who our 'betters' think will be around to manufacture/maintain all of the gadgets & doodads that make their VERY comfortable existence possible if all that's being turned out by the predominately Leftist educrats are lawyers, 'social activists', & 'artists'. Then again, that eventuality may be why they're busily engaged in replacing the native-born American populace w/ more, pliant, foreigners who'll do what they're told by their self-styled 'superiors'.
