I Am Your Worst Nightmare

From Survivalblog:

Retreat Security: I Am Your Worst Nightmare, by Jeff T.

I am the leader of a band of 8-to-12 looters. I have some basic military training. We move from place to place like locusts devouring everything in our path. My group is armed with light weapons and can develop and follow simple plans of attack. We take what we want by force of arms. We prefer none of our victims survive because that could cause problems for us in the future.

It has been six months since the grid went down. You and the other five members of your party have settled into what may be a long grinding existence. The every day tasks of growing and gathering have now become routine. The news from the outside is extremely limited but you don’t really miss it much. Life is simple but physically demanding.

Although things may seem stable you will need to keep your team focused and alert. This is your first and most important layer of defense. You should hold an immediate reaction drill once per week. Keep things simple. Practice a specific response to such threats as injury, fire, attack and evacuation. Despite the challenges you must maintain contact with those around you such as neighbors for vital clues that trouble is brewing. Regular monitoring the radio will be critical in providing an early warning of trouble. You may be able to safely interview refugees with risking your party. Keep in mind the information you get from them may not always be reliable.

While you have been farming I have been learning the best tactics to employ to seize your property and your goods. I have been refining them since we hit the road right after the lights went out. I have conducted eight “hits” so far and have been successful seven times. Here are some of my “lessons learned”...

Are you and yours ready, right now, to repel boarders?

If not, what's your plan?

This is frightening. Especially to an old maid like me. I'm already concerned that if there is a meltdown of the grid, my presently-oblivious neighbors will decide that the survival of their children should trump my property rights. But to face aggressive predators? I wouldn't have a chance in hell, even if I could shoot a few first.

Ma'am:

Sounds like forming a mutual-aid society ought to be a pretty high priority.

You are completely right about that. The problem is educating my extended family and circle of friends.

There are MANY single and divorced women (and their little children) out there who will be completely screwed if something like this happens, and none of them presently have ANY clue.

This is a most unfortunate fallout of the disintegration of family and the purposeful denigration of the role of husbands and fathers in leading said families.

Might I suggest a letter, written in the tone of a dear friend pleading with loved ones to wake up, interspersed liberally with facts re national debt, unfunded liabilities, and the planned release of convicts due to budget pressures?

I'd be honored to publish same. Drop me a line at westernshooters@gmail.com.

Over the top. Possible but highly improbable.

Thieves aren't that industrious. They are l-a-z-y, bragadocious and cocky. Traits not endearing to longevity in that line of work...

If an outfit like that were rumored to exist, they would not be able to keep their existence secret or hidden enough. -There would be so many bloodthristy volunteers eager to take them down or at least do a little whittlin'. I know a few skilled folks that would luuuuve to track critters like that...

Likewise they are also vulnerable where ever they set camp...

The last time anything remotely like that happened on these shores was the War of Independence 1861-65by gubmint sponsored rouge elements on both sides, so it can happen to some degree...

There's that dang gubmint thing again. Yep, I'm many more times worried about gubmint issues in TEOTWAWKI than rouge elements being that sophisticated... Didn't Katrina give us an example? Likewise the little publicized firearms confiscation at Greensburg, KS after the F4 cleared the table?

I disagree on a couple things. First of all the default for a fight is that the defenders win. In this context the looters are trying to take what the defenders have and unless they kill, capture or drive them off they loose.

Also I wouldn't be THAT worried about fire because if they torch the house they loose the stuff inside. Their goal is almost surely the stuff inside. Maybe they would get upset that things aren't going like they want and decide to torch it before leaving but I am not so sure.

As for 100 meters of no cover that would be nice to keep someone from getting close enough to make an easy last rush to the house from cover. However in terms of denying cover to the enemy darn near any center fire rifle is plenty accurate at 100 meters.

I did have a hard time reading this article because it popped back and forth from the first person view of the looter and general suggestions. Interesting reading all the same.

Sounds like Mad Max and it is scary. Part of me says that thugs generally don't get that well organized and industrious. But we already have gangs in the US that are this well organized, don't we?

The concept for the thugs is; Keep cutting down the trees to harvest the fruit. Uh, where does the NEXT harvest come from, genius?

I'm reminded of King Theoden's line from The Two Towers, "What can men do against such reckless hate?"

I think I get the author's point though. (Which is actually sort of in line with Aragorn's response. "Ride out and meet them." Counterattack) There will be those looking to take what little you have by force because they're too lazy or stupid to do for themselves. Keep it secret, keep it safe, defend it with overwhelming violence.

Also, if the grid goes down for any length of time, then who's going to be out and about? Those people who have made preparations will probably not use their mobility unless absolutely necessary. To do so reveals resources to all who see them moving. The only folks who I can foresee moving about openly would be gangs displaying their firepower and trolling for targets. Or the government. Sorry, was that redundant? HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Apologies if my TEOTWAKI humor is too black for some of you this Halloween morning.

Pete, starting/joining a local MA group sounds like a great first step. But for the long term, these MA groups would have to start recognizing each other and supporting each other (like a civilization or something, huh?) I'm interested in doing the same here.
