Obamessiah Über Alles! Obamessiah Über Alles!
Hat-tip to Loren for this story, as blogged by Larry Correia:

Obama repeated his pledge to boost the size of the active military. But he said the nation's future and safety depends on more than just additional service members.
"It also depends on the teacher in East L.A., or the nurse in Appalachia, the after-school worker in New Orleans, the Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, the Foreign Service officer in Indonesia," he said.
Obama had outlined many of the proposals offered Wednesday during appearances in Iowa last December.
"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," he said Wednesday. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."(editor's note: emphasis added by WRSA)
He said he would make federal assistance conditional on school districts establishing service programs and set the goal of 50 hours of service a year for middle school and high school students.

Graphic hat-tip to Exurban League, who notes:

This inconceivably vast proposal is hardly being mentioned by the MSM; just a throwaway line in last week's speech about volunteerism.
But what will this "civilian national security force" do? Obama didn't say.
Where will they get their funding? Didn't say.
Wouldn't this force be at least extra-constitutional, if not unconstitutional?
Who would control them?
Would service be mandatory like his other youth "volunteer" initiatives?
::shrug::
At this same speech, he promised to withhold funds from school districts that don't make their junior high and high schoolers serve 50 hours a year (100 hours for college students), provided their type of service is deemed acceptable by a sprawling new Federal bureaucracy.
Oh, and Obama's going to double the size of the Peace Corps while quadrupling AmeriCorps. I'm curious if anyone will be left to fill all the newly vacated private sector jobs.
St. Barack concluded his speech with this gem: "Loving your country must mean accepting your responsibility to do your part to change it."
But what if I love my country the way it is?

Oddly, the Denver Post's "as delivered" transcript doesn't contain the passage.
Might our vaunted Fourth Estate be engaging in a little after-the-fact clean-up?
Say it ain't so, Joe...
Tempus fugit.

Volunteering means freely giving of one's time and effort for the benefit of another. Its not volunteering if your time and effort are taken from you. I really don't think that coerced volunteerism will benefit the participants or the community the way he thinks it will - if indeed that is what he's thinking. If anything it will simply drag currently effective and beneficial community volunteer programs down to the level of that other state run mandatory-volunteer program - the educational system. No wonder the statists of all stripes (Democans and Republicrats) love this guy.
