Liberty Is Dead. Long Live Liberty!

John Venlet links to Wendy McElroy.

Freedom is a basic human desire.

As we live, so does its possibility.

Be Hilts.

"Freedom is a basic human desire."

As you and I define it, then amongst Westerners, yes. For others, not as high as a priority - unless you modify the definition to preclude responsibility.

I learned a few new things from this concerning where we stand. Obama's executive-orders-on-steroids shadow government standing by, and nullification of Congress.

I think greed and envy are the basic desire of the majority. People do not care about liberty under the law. People want a flashy car, house, and easy credit. They will destroy everything to obtain it. We have watched this in action since the beginning of the 20th century. It has only gotten worse as time goes on, but I am probably just jaded this morning as the coffee is not helping. I also realize we are different in attitude, ethics, and morality then most as we would accept living with less if it meant being free.

She chortles over the American Death, and as a Canadian Anarchist, has never done a thing to promote freedom, except to oppose everthing else. Brilliant. I wonder why Japan, Germany, the Phillipines, Mexico, France, Korea, and everyone else we conquered or whipped their ass, is not part of the "American Empire?". I guess we're not as good at that Empire building as she thought. Just another bitter feminist with an axe to grind, and a very, very, small audience. I know, next time a third world shit hole has an earthquake, sunami, revolution or what not, and needs our help, we'll send her instead. I don't know anyone that has ever claimed that America invented freedom. We're just the best example of it to date. Must really suck to live next door to the real thing.

Sean,

Freedom can't be voted into office. A well-armed populace does not guarantee freedom or security, either. Americans are very well armed, and their rights have been systematically and exponentially violated for over 150 years. Even the Iraqis under Saddam were able to own fully-automatic AK-47s. Without the desire for freedom, those AK-47s might as well have been water pistols.

Freedom requires that the majority of the populace knows what true freedom is and desires it. They have to be angry at those who would deny them their freedom. They need to live in a way that reflects their love of freedom. They need to speak out in a way that reflects their love of freedom. That is where writers such as Wendy McElroy come in. I wouldn't speak so poorly about her. She, as well as many other writers, are accomplishing more for the cause freedom than you can imagine. Freedom comes from the individual out, not from the top down. Writers speak to individuals. They instill ideas. Mere "action," without sound theory to support it, is useless. It takes a bit of seemingly innocuous rumbling before that rumbling spreads and manifests itself in a tsunami.

In the land of Patrick Henry and the British surrender at Yorktown:

http://www.wlwt.com/r/26332888/detail.html

Charged with disorderly conduct and questioned by the FBI ANTIterror task force, for baring his chest with the Fourth Amendment written on it at the airport.

This is also the land of Gabriel Prosser's Rebellion. Gabriel's plan was to kill the enslavers and their families and all their supporters.
Prosser was betrayed by another slave, who wore no actual chains since he served the master up at the big house. You know. The good life.
