Only a couple of my family's firearms are for sporting purposes.

I’ll start with a quote from Hubert H. Humphrey,
"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be carefully used and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of the citizens to bear arms is just one guarantee against arbitrary government and one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible."
Obviously this was said some time in the past, given his reference to the appearance of tyranny being “remote”. When the .gov predisposes itself to define “sporting purposes” or sport in general seems to reflect back to the “Nazi Weapons Law” 18 March 1938.
It has been said before but I’ll say it again, the Second Amendment is NOT nor has it ever been about sports, sporting purpose, crime or any other use of weapons. If you are reading this then you should have no trouble understanding the 2nd Amendment as written,
I understand that in response to the recent alleged actions of a possibly deranged individual, politicians and agencies ruled by them feel obligated to do something visible. To appear to the public as responding in a positive light. I have an idea. In response to this tragedy, you should carefully study all the circumstances. From before his purchase of the weapon and through his actions to the point of his arrest. Then announce the result being that no new law or regulation(s) could have, would have, might have influenced his behavior in the slightest. After all, it’s his behavior that’s the issue, right? In light of your in-depth study and desire to prevent further atrocities you will modify his behavior not the Bill of Rights. I think the public reaction will be more supportive of that effort than anything else you could hope for. I can assure you of one thing, This effort is NOT the answer. Gun Owners will not continue to be the whipping boy for every nutcase that chooses a gun instead of a car, knife, baseball bat or what- have- you to accomplish their misguided objective.
