What was the phrase, "moral displacement"? Remember the classic college psychology department experiment. A volunteer is told he/she will be part of an experiment studying knowledge retention under stress. Another volunteer in a separate room is administered brief low-watt electric shock and tested on what he remembers. The experiment leader encourages the first volunteer to up the voltage. People have increased the charge until the volunteer lost consciousness and possibly suffered permanent damage, once the leader removed the social constraints against sadism.
ReplyDeleteOf course the "shocks" were only a buzzer and the screams were acting. But a disturbing proportion of volunteers went WAY beyond where they thought they would, and were surprised when shown the videotape.
Everyone has someone they would like to punish. Crafty leaders give them the opportunity to do a surrogate.
I am not sure I agree with the disparaging remarks about the judge. I dont reconcile the signing off of "torture" to the signing off on industrial scale murder.
