AP: A Request For Perspective

Arctic Patriot asks Southern readers for their thoughts and sources on their heritage as part of the conquered territories of the former Confederate States of America.

Go and help him out, if you can.

Resist.

Hat-tip to The Other McCain for posting this clip today from Gods and Generals:

We are a band of brothers
And native to the soil,
Fighting for the property
We gained by honest toil;
And when our rights were threatened,
The cry rose near and far--
"Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star!"

CHORUS: Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.

As long as the Union
Was faithful to her trust,
Like friends and like brothers
Both kind were we and just;
But now, when Northern treachery
Attempts our rights to mar,
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

First gallant South Carolina
Nobly made the stand,
Then came Alabama,
Who took her by the hand.
Next quickly Mississippi,
Georgia and Florida
All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

Ye men of valor, gather round
The banner of the right;
Texas and fair Louisiana
Join us in the fight.
Davis, our loved president,
And Stephens statesman are;
Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

And here's to old Virginia--
The Old Dominion State--
Who with the young Confederacy
At length has linked her fate;
Impelled by her example,
Now other states prepare
To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

Then cheer, boys, cheer;
Raise the joyous shout,
For Arkansas and North Carolina
Now have both gone out;
And let another rousing cheer
For Tennessee be given,
The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag
Has grown to be eleven.--CHORUS

Then here's to our Confederacy,
Strong are we and brave;
Like patriots of old we'll fight
Our heritage to save.
And rather than submit to shame,
To die we would prefer;
So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

  2. Two points: After it was all over, Congress added the 13th,
    14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. But NONE of these amendments outlawed Secession. Also, Jefferson Davis was never tried for treason. He was incarcerated for a period of time and then sent home. The thought was, if the North had put him on trial, he could have made a successful legal argument for Secession. The jury is still out. And, we have a different country today. The North had thousands of ignorant Irish immigrants and other fools that were eager to rush to the colors to do Lincoln's bidding. All we have today are the whiners of ACORN, MOVEON.org, SEIU, rogue cops and a military which is growing more socially and culturally dysfunctional. Might made right in 1861. I doubt if it would be as big of a one-sided rout today. But, I do not doubt that it would be just as horrific, as the depth of personal animosity is just as deep. The same pukes who called me a "BABYKILLER" as I walked through the terminal at LAX in 1970,in uniform, now have law degrees and work for Hillary and Barry. Alea iacta est.

  3. Being a descendant of people driven from their homes by the members of the Elitist Democratic Party later to become the slaver warmongers of the C.S.A. I would suggest that we all go to

    http://westernrifleshooters.blogspot.com/2008/06/vanderboegh-poor-white-boys-past-as.html

    As Mike wrote.
    “Do you know ‘Poor White Boys’?”

    “Captain, is the Governor a Baptist?”

    “Yeah, I reckon he is.”

    “Well, all right then,” said the fiddler and began to scratch out the tune of “Bonnie Blue Flag”, that most sacred of Confederate battle songs, only the words the boys of the “Thirsty First” sang along with the music would have horrified the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

    “We are a band of planters, unfaithful to our wives,
    Fighting for our property, but frightened for our lives.
    So when our rights are threatened, our cry goes near and far:
    Send us a million poor white boys to fight our wicked war!
    Hurrah! Hurrah! For planter’s rights Hurrah!
    Hurrah for the poor white boys who fight our rich man’s war!”

    Read the whole thing and ask yourself what was noble about "the cause"?

    This continuing effort to rewrite, white wash, and sterilize the history of the C.S.A. is a fools errand at best.
    Divides us from other freedom advocates and forces them into the collectivists arms.

    Now imagine how a black Southerner feels or any black Descendant of slaves.
    Or the descendants of whites oppressed by the C.S.A. upper classes.
    How about the real Aunt Jenny Brooks and her family?
    Do I need to mention the others?

    As bad as Lincoln was he will always hold the moral high ground when compared to the leaders of the Confederacy.

    "people driven from their homes by the members of the Elitist Democratic Party later to become the slaver warmongers of the C.S.A."

    What does this section mean?

    Facts, please.

    You do know that 'Poor White Boys' was not a contemporary song, right?

    And how do you explain the thousands and thousands of poor, white, non-slave-owning boys who fought for the CSA?

  5. When the scurrilous run out of arguments, they play the slavery card.

    After I explain the Corwin Amendment to them, they run and hide.

    South Carolina was invaded on 26 December, 1860. That's what started the unlawful War Against Southern Freedom.

  6. C.A. In answer to your question I am from what you might call a Mormon family.
    The Mormon extermination order (just the most famous of several examples) was not issued by Republicans.
    But I could have just as easily been a descendant of free (non slave) blacks.
    Or from one of several so called Indian tribes.
    Just to start the list.

    The elitists then only believed in their own freedom just as they do now.
    I would like to say this is a Democrat only problem but I will not lie to myself or you.

    "You do know that 'Poor White Boys' was not a contemporary song, right?"

    No,nor would I have cared I referenced it to drive home a point. I was aware of the so called Southern Unionists most of whom did not want to fight for planters read that slavers rights.

    Go here to learn a little more
    http://www.1stalabamacavalryusv.com/loyalist.aspx

    such as this tidbit "In his book Lincoln’s Loyalists, Richard Nelson Current estimated that 100,000 white southerners served in the federal army in contrast to 850,000-900,000 confederates. That means about one out of 10 southerners wore blue rather than gray. If you add the 185,000 blacks who fought in the union army, and most of them were southern including 10,000 from Alabama, it is apparent that the war was not between North and South but rather as Colonel Oates called it, “The War Between the Union and the Confederacy.”."
    Just to start the list again.

    "And how do you explain the thousands and thousands of poor, white, non-slave-owning boys who fought for the CSA?"
    If we exclude the draftees, the Confederacy passed its first conscription act 16 April 1862, The union scarcely a year later began conscripting men. How many fought of their own free will? How many fought just for their own home town?
    More fought for the Union of their own free will from the beginning.

    Do I need to mention all of the southern soldiers that had just returned from "spreading Dem.
    Pres. Buchanan's freedom and rights" in what would become Utah?

    Take a look into Reconstruction and you will find that more than a little of the worst was returned Southerners now in charge punishing their former oppressors.

    Revenge what a sad waste of effort they could have rendered their former oppressors forever irrelevant.

    You do not have to take my word for it. Look into it for your self.

    I am more than a little tired of all of the historical research I end up doing around here to back up my points! I work 60 to 70 Hours a week with out a day off for a long time.
    So I reserve the right to not respond on this issue again so that I might sleep!
    Thank you all.

    As usual you have not studied history at all.
    What was that statement about those that fail to study true history being quite simply Doomed.

    "Our new government['s] ... foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery — subordination to the superior race — is his natural and moral condition."
    1861, Alexander Stephens, vice president of the Confederacy.

    You could read the Confederate States Constitution and all of its protections of slavery.

    You can not invade what you already hold.

    If you read more than what you think will support your beliefs. such as William Tecumseh Sherman's memoirs.
    You would know that the south had already effectively succeeded in Secession.
    Then they attacked a United states possession.
    If South Carolina had taken a policy like Cuba's toward Gitmo The Confederacy would most likely be a third world country today.
    For similar reasons.

    Lincoln would most likely have been a one termer.

    And I would not have wasted so much of my time and effort on someone that did not use the internet search engine at his disposal to check his statements against reality.

    I will not respond to anyone that has put as little effort into this as you.

  8. Happy D-

    The moral high ground is an illusion, defined by the victor in every war. Every one.

    You said:
    "Now imagine how a black Southerner feels or any black Descendant of slaves.
    Or the descendants of whites oppressed by the C.S.A. upper classes."

    Dangerous logic, there.

    I suppose you would say that we should not mention the Revolution, because the founders were, after all, largely well-off white slave owners. It might alienate people and drive them into collectivist arms. Right? It's the truth. Quite a few of our founders were slave owning people. Guess what? The Brits were not. So, I suppose logically the next statement is "As bad as King George was, he still held the high ground over George Washington, Jefferson, et.al."

    Whitewashing the CSA? None of that here or on my page. I asked for perspectives. Pretending it is all good vs. evil is to deny reality.

    You ever talk to a civilian German survivor of the Allied (US/Britain or Soviet) "liberation" in WW2? Dresden? The Soviet March to Berlin? Did the allies have a tight grasp on the so-called "moral high ground"? Really?

    Like I said, there is no moral high ground. It is an illusion.

    And, if I may add, discussing history is never, never, ever a "fool's errand", no matter what perspective is offered. If more people did it, we might not be in the midst of repeating it here.

  10. Happy D, true history?

    Like Lincoln saying: "I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the White and Black races--that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with White people, and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the White and Black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the White race. . . I give. . . the most solemn pledge that I will to the very last, stand by the law of the State, which forbids the marrying of white people with negroes."

    Also, when secession was brought to his attention, the first words out of his mouth were not "We must protect the blacks," but "What will become of my tariff?"

    The words of one captured black Confederate soldier ring true. When asked by a union officer, "Why are you fighting us?" He replied, "Because you're down here."

  12. Sorry I have been quite ill and besieged by my foolish little brothers breakdown of his mental health.
    In the event that anyone wanders in here in the future I will spend a little more time here before I depart this post.

    First Brass. Old Abe was a racist in a time such views were common. So what?
    That does not change the fact that the leaders of South Carolina may they suffer for what they have done started the war. Weather you want to count it from the moment they fired on an unarmed merchant ship The Star of the West. Or the attack on a united states possession namely Fort Sumter.

    "Also, when secession was brought to his attention, the first words out of his mouth were not "We must protect the blacks," but "What will become of my tariff?" "

    If you had bothered to do the most basic internet search you would find that this Quote is most likely a big stinking lie.
    I have spent two hours searching this quote and variations of it the only place I find it is the Confederate history revisionist web sites.
    They never note a source for this quote.

    Nothing makes me quite as angry as being told something is fact when even the most basic fact check would have cast doubt.
    I put a great deal of work into checking my statements whenever possible.
    I would suggest Brass that you at least try to check your work.

  13. No Arctic Patriot we should discuss all these things.

    However your grasp on history is self serving to say the least.
    "Quite a few of our founders were slave owning people. Guess what? The Brits were not."

    Go here to learn a little about slavery in Britain.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Britain_and_Ireland

    I take it you missed the movie Amazing Grace a few years back?

    ""As bad as King George was, he still held the high ground over George Washington, Jefferson, et.al.""

    Not familiar with King Georges orders protecting Slavery in Virginia I take it?

    This post was subtitled. Arctic Patriot asks Southern readers for their thoughts and sources on their heritage as part of the conquered territories of the former Confederate States of America.

    Not being a Southerner I politely posted nothing on your site.

    "Whitewashing the CSA? None of that here or on my page"
    I have been to your page most recently today The revisionist history is so ludicrous that I will be showing the comments to my history teacher uncle for a good laugh.

    "You ever talk to a civilian German survivor of the Allied (US/Britain or Soviet) "liberation" in WW2? Dresden? The Soviet March to Berlin? Did the allies have a tight grasp on the so-called "moral high ground"? Really?"
    Several actually five live in my neighborhood.
    I do not think based on past discussions they would support your view.
    One I believe would have a violent reaction to your line of reasoning. I will not seek her counsel her health is frail and I look forward to her presence every Sunday.

    "Like I said, there is no moral high ground. It is an illusion."

    I hope you do not believe that. If you do how can anyone trust you to make a decision that is not self serving to others detriment?

    "And, if I may add, discussing history is never, never, ever a "fool's errand", no matter what perspective is offered. If more people did it, we might not be in the midst of repeating it here."

    Never said it was I like my history with as much truth as possible.
