SFC Jerry "Mad Dog" Shriver

Read this account of the legendary SF SFC Jerry "Mad Dog" Shriver, who got that handle courtesy of Radio Hanoi.

More info here.

Food for thought as the Bolshies close is Mad Dog's mythic radio transmission when, as team leader and surrounded by NVA, he refused extraction, saying:

“No, No, I’ve got 'em right where I want 'em, surrounded from the inside.“

Get ready.

  1. I've read about him before, but not this lengthy article. Thanks.

  2. That man is so cool he pisses ice cubes.

And what's that on the front of the M3? An ad-hod hand guard or a hush-puppy?

  3. I'd like to say "thanks" and "welcome home" to all Vietnam era veterans. I'm sorry you had to put up so much sh!t over there AND here when you got back. Your generation is now making sure that mine is being treated better when we return home.

  4. Silenced M3 (includes a vid)

    Fun fact:

...It is said that the cost of cleaning, refinishing and issuing 40 M3/M3A1s is the same as the landed cost of a single new .45 caliber H&K UMP submachine gun...

  5. That reminds me of a Marine F4U Corsair pilot who called his base on the radio during a solo flight, "Hey fellas, c'mon up because I've got about thirty Zeros cornered up here!"

  6. Mad Dog Shriever-not too many people like that around, warriors. It will be very interesting just how many there are on our side vs. the enemy's. Bad thing about these types, if they're just in it for the kill they won't care who; they'll work for those that can supply the most ammo and beer. Very scary thought and any known enemy combatants like that are ALWAYS a priority. The Nazi commando Otto Skorzeny was insturmental in breaking up the the attempted Army putsch against Adolf Hitler June 22, 1944(bomb aside).

Mm-I had an opportunity once to get a M3... and I still regret not doing a better job convincing ______________ to sell it. Only things I see wrong with the design are the too basic sights and in full auto the rate of fire's just a little too slow-I'd lighten the bolt just a bit.

  7. Thanks for posting this!

The "surrounded from the inside" quote seems similar to one usually attributed to Chesty Puller:

"They're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time."

  8. Jerry was always ready. A couple of MP just about crapped their pants after Jerry gave them his weapon after being picked up for curfew violation in Saigon. Gave them one gun, kept 7 other weapons that they never checked him for. Learn from Jerry, always have more than one way to keep yourself alive.

  9. ALL the men in Plaster's book are just about super-human!

This is required reading in my neck o' the woods!
