A Koan From The Monastery

"Koan" explained.

Examples:

The spear is not the point.

The point is not the spear.

Meditate on the meaning of this wisdom.

Really.

  1. Meditated on it. Got nothing. Is it the spear or the point? C'mon, give me a hint here.

  5. Dualism is error.

The shaft and the point are one.

    The warrior is the weapon.

  6. I get it! If a Kenyon bigamist sires a bastard with an American prostitute the dollar will collapse.

    Did I get it right???

  7. A spearhead with no shaft is an awkward dagger. A shaft with no point is a blunt instrument. The spirit of the spear is to maintain distance, and, failing that, to reach and destroy.
The Romans taught a holistic method of swordfighting as well. The point can slash as well as stab; the edge can stab as well as slice. The crossguard can hook and pierce, and the pommel can crush. They must be well-assembled and firm as a unit, though.
Don't be a sniper OR a hand-to-hand specialist. Flow from one form to the next as the situation requires. Their REaction will always be slower than your ACTION.

  8. The spear is a only effective as a unified weapon. Removing one piece or elevating another piece above the rest will lessen its effectiveness. Each has a part to play. Jon has understood well.
