Good Question

Billy Beck asks it.

The Village Voice gives the background.

I'll answer the question with a story from my days as a baby Assistant District Attorney.

One day, while talking to an NYPD anti-crime (i.e., a special unit used against taxi robberies, armed assaults, and other high-intensity problems) cop whose arrests I had prosecuted previously, I mentioned something about "the good guys".

The cop shook his head, looked at me with pity, and said in substance:

Pete, remember two things if you remember anything of what I tell you. First, the NYPD is the largest gang in America. Never forget that. And secondly, just remember that we are, in the final analysis, private security for special interests. Keep those things in mind and you'll be a lot better able to see reality.

I did, and I was.

You remember those things, too.

And be careful out there.

  1. Billy Beck asks what could possibly be more corrupt than a New York City Cop? How about a New Orleans City Cop or a Orleans Parish Sheriff´s Deputy or a Jefferson Parish. I have Lived in Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish( Louisiana)and have worked in New York and from what I have seen (me, I saw) N.O. wins the Corruption Prize.

  3. Rather than rehash all I've said before on the matter of rotten cops (isn't that redundant?), I'll just post this link that spells out my view of the matter in detail:

Can't argue with you there... after traveling around the world on uncle sugars dime, I saw some pretty corrupt places, but N.O. has always held the top slot in my mind.

  5. Is that the same Village Voice that ran an opinion piece saying "White People Have Gone F--ing Insane," refering to the Tea Party/Restore the Constitution/gun rights groundswell?

  6. The bottom line is if there's a guy with a badge, don't trust him. Don't trust him under ANY circumstance.

How difficult is that to understand ?

  8. My father-in-law is a retired cop. He says to never trust cops. Figure it out.

  9. It seems more and more like British soccer hooligans hit the nail on the head: ACAB.

Too bad it got that way, but in too many instances, the police forgot to police themselves.

  10. I've been saying for years that there are not any good cops anymore! If there were, they would be arresting and putting in jail their corrupt colleagues. They don't. They all line up behind them and do cover up with false sworn statements, lying on the witness stand, etc. ad nauseum.

ALL COPS ARE BAD COPS AND ARE THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE - All across the nation.

    She was arrested.

  12. They are NOT all bad, damn it!!. I know a few truly good ones. (Yes, I really do.) Some are misinformed, but straighten up when educated. That's like saying that all militia members are Tim McVeighs. Preposterous!

Keep the all-cops-are-bad speech under the control of a cool head and at least a modicum of actual THOUGHT. If they are bad, simply because they don't turn in their bad bros, then why aren't you turning them under in a field? Don't you care as much for fellow citizens? Are the police not the servants, and you the master? Don't they work for YOU? If so, straighten them out yourself! OR file complaints with citizen authority.

It's all silly. Instead of bashing all cops, find out who the good ones are and get some sort of relationship going. You're a helluva lot better off if you "know your enemy", so to speak. Ya might want to start with the Sheriff's office....
