American Apocalypse -- Part 1

As referenced by John Robb on his Global Guerrillas site, here is the first section of a near-future novel by "Nova" on life in the food chain, circa 2011.

More in the right margin of the American Apocalypse blog and at Amazon.

Enjoy.

  2. Thanks for this post. In light of this I was wondering if you had read the following book (sorry I couldn't find an email address to send it to): http://www.rand.org/pubs/monographs/MG819/

  3. WritePhoto,

Thanks. That is amazing. No, I had not read the book. I did read the Brief from the website. Very interesting.

I wrote about this, but I drew on my knowledge of German Prewar/WWII Police Battalions. Some interesting parallels here. At least for the prewar German model.

These are essentially light infantry troops with police powers.

  4. Federally-Commanded Light Infantry with civilian police powers occupying your country is the definition of a Police State.

Of course, they could be very well behaved with much respect for citizens, local government, and the local police....

A better situation with the same military capability would be "a well regulated militia" consisting of local respected men who are on-call. Let local police handle thieves and ruffians.

Maybe this would not be "better" from the Federal point of view since there are local loyalties.

    Cheers.

  5. I've read all of the first part, and just started into the second today. I want to let Nova know, that even though WV isn't portrayed too kindly in his work; if he stumbles on to my mountain, I help as I can.

  6. Kevin Patrick,

Thanks for the offer. Don't worry. I am not going to be kind to Ohio either.

  7. American Apocalypse needs some SERIOUS editing in punctuation, spelling and tense.

I'd advise that the author at least run it through an automated spell checker, and then read through each section at least twice before releasing it. A man's work should reflect his abilities.

"The gulf cart was there..." golf?

"I had learned this rulle long before..." rule?

    - Just two I found in 40 seconds in a random sampling from Chapter 21.

  8. PITA,

You are reading the free version. The one you pay for was rewritten and had another person edit it.

The free version was left out there for people who could not afford to buy a copy.

  9. Did you pull the free version?

  10. Nova must have just done it; from the American Apocalypse blog:

I pulled the free drafts due to complaints about spelling and other errors. The archives and prior posts are still available.

Thank you for taking the time to read my writing. I hope you will enjoy it. Comments are always appreciated.

  11. Nova wrote some serious literary crack cocaine-I was going to breeze through it but wound up reading all the way through.

Good job on the characters, and the world you painted. Good enough job I can excuse the at times rough editing on the free version.

...They should've bugged out as soon as the battle of the food distribution center was over.

    Props.

  12. Thank you J. Croft. I am glad you enjoyed it.

The first (free) draft was my blog posts pasted together.

You see I write live. I still am doing it as I started another book.

I write, then post what I wrote. Sometimes I post 3 times a day. I invite comments. Especially about hardware and such.

It has its drawbacks but I like it. Sometimes the comments influence the flow of the story.

  13. Aside from the Constitutional issues of a federal police force, the desicion to use the USMS as the base for the organization is foolish.

First, we already have a national police force, the FBI. The FBI involves itself in all aspects of crime in the United States, especially after the passing of so-called civil rights laws, which basically made it a police force and even worse after the recent hate crimes act.

But, the USMS, smaller than the FBI and without a uniform component, unlike the Secret Service, the Park Police and the Federal Protective Service, is highly unsuited to a mission not related to its duties related to the federal court system, protection of courts and judges, serving of writs and warrants, and escaped federal prisoners and other interstate fugitives.

What would be more appropriate is the largest uniformed federal law enforcement agency, the U.S. Border Patrol. It is larger than the FBI and USMS, it is primarily uniformed in deployment and outlook, it is similar to the Gendarmerie and the Carbinari in that is further developing a para-military outlook. And it has, or used to have, an organic air wing.

In most states they are already deputized as state law enforcement officers and perform a series of joint duties with local agenices.

For a bunch of smart guys, those Rand people aren't that bright.
