Earlier today, I contacted the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (i.e., NRA's overt political wing) and spoke with a gentleman by the name of Angus McClellan.
I asked Mr. McClellan why the NRA-ILA had not issued any email alert directing its members to contact their Senators in opposition to AG-nominee Eric Holder.
Mr. McClellan observed that he was "not sure what good that would do", to which I replied with the litany of objections raised by Codrea and others. He stammered, then said that he would bounce it off a few people and get a response back to me at my email address.
That was about 1130 est this morning, and as of 2300 est tonight, I have no reply.
Sebastian has offered an explanation which, as far as it goes, captures accurately the kind of thinking that happens in Washington institutions such as the NRA.
And that is precisely the problem.
Member organizations like the NRA soon forget that they exist for one reason -- to serve the interests of their members. If they do not achieve that mission, then a rational membership would go elsewhere.
How about Gun Owners of America, who have confirmed that they will be opposing the Holder nomination and will be sending an email blast to their members. Click here to join GOA's email alert list and here to become a GOA member, BTW.
Closing thoughts and action items:
1) Vanderboegh has it right -- if the NRA won't fight a SOB like Holder, they ain't gonna be worth crap when it comes to the AWB2 battle and the subsequent excitement. "Bugout Boogie", indeed....
2) In the meantime, if you are an NRA member (especially voting Life members), call the main number at 800-672-3888 and ask for Mr. McClellan. If you get voice mail, call back, ask for ILA, and speak directly to someone there. Tell 'em why they must oppose Holder, and what you will do if they do not.
3) Folks, once Holder is in, why would you expect the NRA or anyone else to be effective in stopping what Holder and his Dark Lord plan to do about your guns and other trivia, like your Sixth Amendment right to counsel?
In other words, we are rapidly moving towards a date of decision.
Submit.
Or fight.
Alea iacta est.
Great post CA. I believe The decision has already been made by the NRA. Hence the silence....
ReplyDeleteWashington and it's "workings" have dam near eroded everything in this Great Nation...

Well, I spoke with Angus today, he said he's gotten a lot of phone calls. He said the matter is up at the executive offices, and once NRA-ILA takes a position then they will post it on the website. Sounds like the calls are working.
