Vanderboegh: Wanted

WANTED
by the ATF

POSSIBLE CONSPIRACY TO VIOLATE THE NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT

DARRELL POWERS
A.K.A.
"Shifty"

Darrell “Shifty” Powers, admitted member of a gang known as the “Band of Brothers,” a/k/a Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, is a “person of interest” to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for conspiracy to violate the National Firearms Act, as he is in possession of semiautomatic rifles and has evinced a proclivity for converting them to full automatic fire.

He is quoted as saying:

“My rifle had a mind of its own.It seemed like I could just point that thing and tell it what I wanted it to hit and it would hit it. I was one of the most remarkable rifles I ever fired. One thing I did was I filed the sear in the trigger assembly on my rifle. I wanted a hair trigger and I liked it filed down so fine that it would shoot three times when I pulled the trigger. It didn’t do it every time, but with an eight round clip, a lot of times it would shoot the first three rounds.”

Powers is an Army veteran and reputed to be a deadly marksman. Considered to be armed and dangerous, he should not be approached. If spotted, contact Agent Jody Keeku of the ATF, the agency’s specialist in prosecuting vicious criminals such as “Shifty” Powers and David Olofson, who was recently convicted of possessing a malfunctioning semi-automatic rifle.

D-Day veteran Darrell "Shifty" Powers to speak at UVa-Wise Nov. 1

Darrell “Shifty” Powers, whose World War II Army unit was immortalized in the book Band of Brothers, will reflect on his experiences during and after the Normandy invasion in a presentation on Monday, Nov. 1, at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.

Powers was just 19 when he parachuted into German-occupied France with the 101st Airborne on D-Day, June 6 1944. Six months later, Powers and his brothers in Easy Company were embroiled in the Battle of the Bulge.

The Clinchco native served Easy Company as a sharpshooter earning two Bronze Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Expert Rifleman Badge.

Band of Brothers author Steven Ambrose once called Powers “as good a soldier as there was in the 101st.”

Powers completed his military service in 1945 and moved to California, where he worked as a machinist for a few years. He later returned to his hometown and took a job with Clinchfield Coal Company, where he was employed for 33 years.
