I read your post from 2009 and it is very touching. Congrats on overcoming a difficult life threatening problem.
But....(here it comes)...I think you are right, to lead a healthy substantial life you in no way want to entangle yourself with handouts of any kind.
That being said, the role of government in the post-industrial age is to smooth out wealth by taxes (to the lower class) or debt (to the corporate class). I don't like it and you don't like it. But there is no AA group for this so how do you proceed?
I can tell you this, we are headed for a "kill off" of great proportions. Maybe that is the only way. Make sure, as you said, the blame is squarely placed - I lay the blame more on the elite and corporations than I do on ordinary citizens, whereas you tend to go the other way - a matter of opinion.
I never understood the mantra that the Tea Party stuff would "save" us. Most of the early Tea Party rallies were nothing but "Don't Cut Medicare/Social Security to fund Obamacare" festivals.
The sad fact is that while socialism does not work, it absolutely sells.
Time for everyone to find their own personal Moira Davidson and go trout fishing - it's all over; the only question is when. As the Wehrmacht said in the closing days of WWII: "Enjoy the war; the peace will be terrible."
Yes, your list of addictive programs is pretty complete, I'd argue that mortgage deduction is solely based on the personal income tax which isn't needed even slightly by the US government and would go away with elimination of that tax.
There is simply no question that Medicare/Medicaid, related programs, at least 50% of the defense budget and possibly as much as 90% of that budget, all foreign aid, and lots more will have to end.
It has to at least be scaled back to below the deficit line.
For advanced anarchists, like me, ending most, if not all, of the US government must happen. Will I suffer personal harm? More than most know, however, I'll just ask for part of the sales of USg property to alleviate some of that. Citizens owe me nothing.

I realized long ago that it wasn't if, but WHEN, SO...
Let's get it over with, so MAYBE we can rebuild in time for my kids to have some sort of life...
Remember this one?
"We don't need no water, let the mothaf***ah BURN!
Burn mothaf***ah, BURN!!"
Yup.
Face it: the longer we delay, the worse it will be.
Bring it on!
No time like the present...
